Thea Hillman is a writer and intersex activist from San Francisco. She has served as the Chair of Intersex Society of North America’s Board and is the author of the critically acclaimed Depending on the Light. A San Francisco poetry slam champion with an MFA in English/Creative Writing, Thea has performed her work at festivals, bookstores, and reading series across the USA. She has produced many performance events, including the sold-out “Intercourse: A Sex and Gender Spoken Word Recipe for Revolution” for the 2001 National Queer Arts Festival. She is on the Mills College Board of Trustees and one of the co-producers of ForWord Girls, the first inclusive all-girl spoken word festival

Thea’s book “Intersex (For Lack of a Better Word)” is her memoir of compelling stories that take a no-holds-barred look at sex, gender, family, community and her growing up as intersex.

Thea was also a key figure in helping the San Francisco Human Rights Commission to conduct the investigation and testified during the subsequent meetings.

Thea Hillman is a Certified Proud Icon as she has dedicated her career to educating people about being intersex.
